Internet Connection Testing

Tenants who are connected to the Internet using the Parks network and experience loss of their Internet connection can follow these procedures to isolate the source of the outage. See Testing Tools for help with the functions that are used for testing.

Is the problem unique to a specific computer?

Try another computer in your office. If the other computer works, check all wiring and network settings of the computer that is not operational on the network.

Is the problem within your office?

Ping your firewall (the firewall's address is the Default Gateway address of the computer).

  • If the firewall does not respond,  ping another computer in your office.

If you get a response check the wiring and network settings of the firewall and recycle the firewall.

If you do not get a response check your hub/switch and all office wiring and network settings.

Is your office connecting to the Park wide network?

Ping the Park's router (65.118.213.225).

  • If you do not get a response check the cabling from the firewall to the Park network and the firewall's WAN network settings.

Check the Park's network status at www.masonsmill.com/netstatus.htm to see if other systems in the Park are experiencing an outage (note the Last Update time).

Check for any notices that have been posted.

Notify the Park management office.

Is the Park's network connected to the Internet?

Ping a server outside the Park (try 198.6.1.1 or 198.6.1.2).

  • If you do not get a response notify the Park management office that the
Parks Internet connection is not functioning.

Is your Domain Name Server operating?

Ping a server on the Internet by name (www.yahoo.com or www.masonsmill.com).

  • If you do not get a reply try pinging the Domain Name Server's address.

If you do not get a reply check your Domain Name Server or notify the operator of the service

Domain Name Servers 65.118.213.226 and 65.118.213.227 are operated by Woodmount Company for the benefit of tenants. Problems with these server should be reported to the Park management office.

Is the problem with web pages?

Try accessing another site. Many sites, even large ones like yahoo, experience outages.

Check if your web browser is using a Proxy Server (in Microsoft Internet
Explorer go to Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Lan Settings), disable using the Proxy Server. If this solves the problem notify the operator of the Proxy Server

  • The Proxy Server proxy.masonsmill.com is operated by Woodmount for the benefit of tenants. Problems should be reported to the Park management
    office.

Is the problem with other services like email?

Try pinging the service's server. If you do not get a response notify the provider of the service.

Check the service's setting on your computer.

Check that your firewall is configured to work with the service.

Is the Network slow?

Ping a few sites on the Internet. If the time in the reply is more than 100 try again in a short time. If the time continues to be greater than 100 notify the Park's management office

Testing Tools

To test network connections you need information about your computer and the network inside your office. Gather this from using winipcfg for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows ME, or ipconfig for Windows NT and Windows 2000.

To run these programs press the Start button, select Run, enter the word Command, press the OK button. At the C:\> enter winipcfg (or ipconfig /all for Windows NT and Windows 2000) and press your Enter key. Press the More button. Note the following values:

  1. The IP Address (this is the address of the computer).
  2. The Default Gateway (this is the address of your Firewall).
  3. The DNS Server (this is the Domain Name Server).

Ping is a simple program that sends a message and receives a reply from a computer. It is used to test that two computers can talk to each other. You run Ping by:

  2. At the C:\> prompt enter the word Ping and the address or name of the computer that you are trying to test communications with, and press your Enter key.
